Chapter Twelve

~ Business or Pleasure ~

Clarissa watched David drive away and then entered her house. Ruthie greeted her with a snort and Penny with a bark. She yawned as she flipped on the lights.

“You missed me, guys. I missed you, too.” She scooped up Ruthie and hugged her, rubbing behind her ears and under her chin. Then she set her down and stroked Penny’s soft ears and belly. Opening the back door, she let them out in the yard for a few minutes before heading to the bathroom to prepare for bed.

“Let’s hit the sack, girls, so we can get up early enough in the morning for our walk and a special Sunday brunch.”

That night as Clarissa lay in bed, thoughts of David and Brent filled her head. Both men attracted her. Brent was everything she wanted in a man―charming, sophisticated, financially stable, and a hunk. However, David was also successful and handsome. Something about him made her yearn to be with him, but at the same time, she wanted to keep things on a professional basis without a romantic entanglement. Why was she even thinking of David like this when Brent was so perfect? She tried to push away such thoughts.

In her dreams that night, a nightmare with David threatening to shoot Brent with his shotgun horrified her. Only murderers shot other people. Though she couldn’t remember why when she woke, she swore she’d never date David.

Sunday came early. Anxious to see Brent again and clarify her feelings, Clarissa tumbled out of bed and headed for the bathroom. She pondered how to discuss the rumors she’d heard. She knew he could explain them. No way could she be with anyone who used the elderly like that. Looks and charm were great, but she wanted an honest, caring man.

Ruthie nudged her leg, reminding her of breakfast. She let the two animals out to potty while she prepared their food. She gave them each a special treat for Sunday. With brunch out of the way, Clarissa took Ruthie and Penny for their morning walk. As they headed down the road, Jasper jumped out of a nearby bush to join them on their leisurely walk. He rubbed against Clarissa and twined between her legs. She stroked his soft fur, and he purred loudly. Ruthie nudged her hand.

“It’s okay, Ruthie, I love you, and no one could ever take your place.” Clarissa patted her back.

When they reached David’s cabin, she saw him sitting on the porch cleaning a gun. “Good morning,” he called as she approached. “Nice day, isn’t it.” Jasper joined his owner on the porch.

Clarissa frowned at the gun as the memory of her unpleasant dream took hold. It didn’t happen, she told herself. Be civil.

“It is. Are you hunting today?”

“No, I’m cleaning my shotgun so it doesn’t rust.” He smiled at her. “You have to keep your tools in top shape or they won’t deliver when you need them.”

Relieved he didn’t plan to kill anything today, she wondered why he had to hunt at all.
